For Thine Own Sake: Daniel’s Prayer of Intercession
In Daniel 9, the prophet finds himself wrestling with a spiritual dilemma—Jeremiah’s prophecy pointed to Israel’s captivity ending soon, yet Daniel’s own visions revealed that more world empires still had to rise and fall. Confused and burdened, Daniel turns not to speculation, but to prayer.
This episode explores Daniel’s powerful intercession in verse 19: “O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not…” We walk through Daniel’s humble requests, his honest confession of sin, and his plea for divine intervention rooted not in Israel’s worthiness, but in God’s mercy.
Most importantly, we consider Daniel’s motive—“for Thine own sake.” His heart beats for God’s glory, God’s city, and God’s people. Even in rebellion, Israel still belonged to the Lord, and Daniel prays on the basis of covenant, not performance.
This message calls us to pray the same way today: for backslidden believers, struggling churches, wandering youth, weary leaders, and a spiritually drifting nation. We intercede not because God’s people are deserving, but because God is merciful and His Name is on them.
May our prayers echo Daniel’s heart: bold in confession, anchored in God’s character, and aimed at His glory alone.
